My stance on use of generative AI in consultations

Long story short: I don't use it.

Oct 1, 2026

Some AI scribes have been taking off in Australia, including Heidi and Lyrebird. I admit I am tempted by the convenience of using an AI scribe. My life would probably be easier and I would be a more efficient doctor. For now, I don't use AI scribes or other forms of generative AI for a couple of reasons:

  • My convenience is not worth the environmental impact

  • I have seen consultation notes and letters written by other doctors with assistance from AI. I am acutely aware of how easy it is for the permanent medical record to be inaccurate if a scribe's output is not proofread carefully (link: ABC article). I strongly suspect that if I used an AI scribe the effort I put into proofreading its output would decline over time, leading to more inaccuracies.

  • I find the process of writing my consultation notes intentionally assists my clinical reasoning
